Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Medical teams in Turkey's most populous city Istanbul started on Thursday to call citizens aged 65 and over to take COVID-19 booster vaccines.
Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement that healthcare units would contact people on the phone to encourage them to receive their third doses one by one.
According to the data released by the governor's office, the rate of booster vaccination of this age group has reached 64.3 percent in the city with a population of over 16 million.
Meanwhile, 51.8 percent of the entire population of the country of 83 million have been vaccinated with two doses.
Nearly 107 million vaccine doses have been administered so far, as part of the nationwide vaccination campaign launched in January with China's Sinovac vaccine. Turkey later included the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in the campaign.
