Latvian State Police (VP) have commenced another criminal procedure over possible vote-buying committed in the recent municipal elections.
After the closure of election sites in the evening Saturday, 5 June, State Police announced having commenced five investigations of possible illegalities committed during municipal elections.
One of these investigations was commenced at Ogre Police Department. Information about vote-buying was not confirmed there.
Investigations continue in Alūksne, Olaine and Jēkabpils. It is likely the State Security Service will be put in charge.
LETA previously reported that last Friday Latvian authorities commenced a criminal procedure over possible vote-buying in Jēkabpils. The case has since been handed over to the State Security Service.
As previously reported, municipal elections were held in Latvia on Saturday, 5 June. Voters were to elect 664 deputies in 40 municipalities – six cities and 34 newly-formed counties that will start operating at the same time as the administrative territorial reform 1 July.
